Connecting to plant medicine: an introductory guide
A beginner's guide to working with the plant world to make massive shifts.
Dear friends,
We live in a conscious universe. We live in a living, breathing, universe where the sun is communicating with the stars and the flowers are blooming of their own accord.
This is the life force of NATURE. The same intelligence that makes up your cells. And it is far more vast and powerful than anything you have been taught in school.
Over a period of colonisation, our inherent connection with Spirit and understanding of plant medicines and teachers was eroded. We forgot who we are, we forgot our real roots. And more importantly, our basic experience of life was dulled so that we couldn’t perceive these different realities.
You might be someone that’s interested in plant medicine, herbal remedies, Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine and other indigenous holistic systems. But even with these, the syllabus was colonised and much of the knowledge was diluted. Even the products on the shelves (especially the big corporate brands) are barely authentic at all. But this has provoked people to really question and reclaim what is real.
In this guide, I’m going to share a few downloads for you to apply in your daily life to significantly enhance your relationship with plant medicines. This will not only give you much more prominent experiences, you will also find more benefit when you work with plant medicines and by connecting with the consciousness of the plant kingdom (the deity of plant medicines being Dhanvantari), you will find that this organic intelligence itself is guiding you in your life journey.
What plant medicine is calling you?
To begin with, we need to understand that plants can uplift us on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level, even if one is just looking to cure physical ailments.
There are several different plants, flowers and fungi that appear as sacrements across nearly all ancient cultures. Each plant has its own vibration and consciousness, for example the lotus symbolises the complete expansion of consciousness and completion. Hence the blue lotus was revered across ancient Egypt (Kemet), going back further in Vedic/Hindu civilisation and later on in Buddhism.
Blue lotus is connected to the third eye chakra (agna chakra) and is consumed directly as flowers in a tea, or also as an essential oil in water or other plant combinations like cacao or medicinal mushrooms. One can practice specific breathing exercises to connect with the spirit of the blue lotus after consuming it.
To feel into what plant medicine is calling you, first identify:
What do you need the most in your life right now? Is it healing within your heart? Is it more joy and expansion? Is it improved immunity?
Are there any plant medicines that are already surfacing in your mind?
A good avenue to research plant medicines is to focus on the specific area of your body or being that needs healing. For example if you are looking for womb healing, you can research into the different plant medicines that assist with this for example Hibiscus flower or Chamomile which is very good for period cramps.
You may have one or several plants that you are keen to explore, for example even Ashwagandha which is an incredible herb for depression and stress.
Remember that if you are seeking a spiritual experience or are looking to work with plants to go deeper into your own journey, sacrements like cacao, blue lotus and hemp (Vijaya) have been worked with for thousands of years for this purpose and have a different format of connecting. Cacao was worked with by the Mayans, for example, in Cacao ceremonies with fire rituals (homa) and prayers.
Find an authentic (if possible indigenous) source
Finding a good source is always the key thing. Every single thing matters - from the seeds that were used to the farming practices and the supply chain. If you’re looking at an end product in a tacky plastic container with a corporate label on it, that’s not a plant medicine. That’s a churned up powder and will barely benefit you.
Here are some KEY things to note in order to get a proper source. Taking the example of Hibiscus flower powder:
Is the source organic, natural and non-GMO? It’s VERY important that your produce is not genetically modified and the seeds are not either. Very important. The intelligence of the plant is in it’s DNA. That’s why there’s been a war on nature for so many years, so make sure you’re awake to that in order to get the real spirit and benefit from the plant.
Is the source pure in quality? This is also key, for example with medicinal mushrooms like Reishi and Chaga it is very hard to find authentic sources. Many powders sold on the market are diluted with rice powder or low quality mushrooms and don’t offer anywhere close to the real medicinal benefit of these miraculous plant medicines which have serious benefits for immunity.
Is this as close to the source and indigenous as possible? I’ll give you an example. I get my Hibiscus flowers from Ann Heirloom Foods in Goa. The uncle there, Jay, works with local indigenous farmers and ONLY SOURCES from indigenous farmers who have carried the local seeds for generations. Secondly, it’s about supporting the real indigenous people of the region and not colonisers or neo-colonisers who profit from our knowledge and culture, whilst extracting from us. For example I will always check who owns the company. The karmic imprint of where you’re buying from does matter.
Keeping these things in mind will ensure that you’re getting a good source. It can be hard to identify what is authentic and what is not.
If you have questions about sources, I only source from the very best I know and will happily direct you. I also keep posting from time to time on Instagram to share good products with people who are seeking them. You can also reply back to this email with questions.
Connect with the spirit of the plant medicine ALWAYS
The plant is a conscious living intelligence. It is not a pill, a tablet, a powder, or whatever limited level of reality that we think it is. In order to connect with the spirit of the plant we must take a moment to connect with it and offer it. This is why in ancient cultures, for example here in India, we have specific mantras, days and rituals for different plant medicines and spirits. You can do this in your own capacity before consuming any plant or natural compound for your health or otherwise.
The first thing to do is offer with gratitude - you can take a few seconds to offer your plant medicine to Spirit, God, Source or any particular deity. For example, Dhanvatari being the presiding deity for plant medicines and an avatar of Vishnu. When we offer our plants to higher consciousness, we create a channel for the spirit of Divine to activate it’s innate intelligence which allows it to work effectively with ours.
The second thing is to consume your medicine or plant consciously. This doesn’t mean swallowing a tablet, but taking the time to prepare your plants. For example you can mix hibiscus flowers into a tea, and take the time to drink them slowly. Connecting with the plant itself be it Tulsi or any other sacred plant, creates space for it to work more effectively on your body on deeper levels.
The third thing is connect to your own intuition as to dosages, time periods and what your body and spirit needs. You can feel into your inner self as to what you need more of or less of. Over time, as you develop a stronger meditation practice, your intuition will expand and sensitivity will heighten. Ten minutes of observing your breathing in a day is a good place to start.
Overall, whether you are just starting your journey exploring the world of natural medicine, or are looking to go deeper into it and upgrade your life, you can start now. Always do your own research and give yourself the time to heal. The body has it’s own healing intelligence and natural medicine can support or catalyse this journey in powerful ways when understood from this context.
