How To Find Your Kuldevi and Kuldevata - Hindu Ancestral Origins
Finding your ancestral lineage origins as a Hindu
In Hinduism, two of the most important Gods or deities a person can worship are their Kuldevi and Kuldevta.
Our ‘Kul’ is one of the many ancestral lineage identifiers of indigenous Hindus and one of the most important deities to worship for clearing ancestral karma, solving life problems, astrological problems and also saving our indigenous Hindu lineages which make up the last ancient living civilisation on earth.
Worship of Kuladevata (masculine deity) and Kuladevi (feminine deity) are our ancestral lineage deities, from where we originate in terms of consciousness too. If you think of life like the DNA strand double helix, Shiva and Shakti, these are the two masculine and feminine deity origins which when we take the blessings of, harmonise us from a deep consciousness level as our genetics are connected to them.
All birth Hindus (Sanatan Dharma sects) will also have a:
Gotra (Rishi origin, required for most Hindu rituals)
Jati and Varna (there are four varnas and multiple jatis)
Nakshatra (birth star)
most often a Sampradaya (indigenous sect like Shaiva, Vaishnava, Shakti and Smart)
and then as an individual soul, different Guru Paramparas that are part of Sanatan Dharma too, depending on one’s spiritual journey (does not include new age spirituality, although that is useful in its own right)
Isht Devata is something you choose for yourself as the deity you connect to the most on a personal basis
**If you are not a birth Hindu, you can always choose an Isht Devata for yourself and that will fulfil everything for you, both spiritually and materially!
A Hindu must visit their Kuldevi and Kuldevata once in a year, this also helps to get rid of Pitru dosh (ancestral trauma) and clear life obstacles, support one’s spiritual progress and give protection. Once a Kula identity is lost, it is gone forever which is why Hindus should preserve their lineages.
(The Kuldevi and Kuladevata only exist for birth Hindus. If a woman marries outside of Hinduism they lose that identifier forever. The Kula of two people marrying also determine their combined karma, generally speaking Varna and Gotra are the two elements taken in consideration with regards to marriage in Hinduism.)
In the modern world, it can be hard to find one’s Kuladevata and Kuladevi.
With centuries of colonisation, many Hindus have lost their own ancestral origins with the course of time. But fear not, if you seek to find it, then you definitely can. And this guide will attempt to help you just a tiny bit.
Here are some simple pointers if you do not know and what to find your Kuldevata and Kuladevi temples:
Ask the elders in your family, as your Kula and Gotra both biologically come from your father’s side, you’ll have to check there. If you have lost contact with your extended family, attempt to find your jati community even on social media (Twitter is a good place to seek out traditional Hindu organisations or pages and ask them for help).
Find your ancestral native village, for example the native village for my Vadnagara Nagar jati is Vadnagar in Gujarat. You can ask the locals or check with the local ancient temples in the region, ask the pandits there to provide information as they may keep a record for the whole Hindu community in the area.
Seek out digital and physical databases of your jati network. In Hinduism we have multiple varna and jatis, which are like tribal identities, often linked to specific villages and native lands of India. Some of these also have their own online communities or communities in villages or cities.
Many Hindus have kept their entire ancestry records in places like Kashi or Prayag so you can check there.
Here are some tips to start with, but one of the single most important things you can do to find your Kuldevi / Kuldevata if you do not know it is to PRAY THROUGH YOUR INTUITION.
Ask your Isht Devata that you want to find your Kula deities for example. Sit in meditation and intuitively ask your Kuldevi and Kuladevata to present themselves.
This is a telepathic universe we live in, and the deities also live inside of us. The blessings of your Kuldevi and Kuladevata will help you accelerate your progress in life. This is something which once lost is lost forever. Prayers that all Hindus who seek to find their Kuldevi and Kuladevata, find their ancestral deities.
