In Hindu dharma, there are few things that are more important than ancestral rituals. We recognise these rituals to be necessary for our well-being in this material plane - but also as a way to repay the ancestral ‘rin’ or karmic debt we incur from incarnating.
Ancestral trauma is carried forward through generations - likewise, Pitru Dosh is one of the most common sources of suffering in the Vedic birth chart. Pitru Dosh can lead to financial distress, disease, blockages in your spiritual and material growth.
Yet in the modern day, finding authentic guides for Pitru Tarpan is very hard - even in the online Hindu spaces like Twitter, most of it is half knowledge.
And we know that half knowledge is sometimes more dangerous than no knowledge at all. Which is why it matters so much to have a genuine source.
Here are some key things to know about the 2 week period of Pitru Paksh where ancestral tarpan rituals are conducted:
It starts from Tuesday 17th September until Wednesday 2nd October this year.
The main places for Pitru tarpan rituals in India include Prayag, Kashi, Badrinath and Gaya.
Many pandits won’t tell you that you’re not meant to go to Gaya unless both the parents have expired, other places are different. The full Gaya Shraddh process technically lasts 9-15 days in the fullest way.
If a person has already done Pitru tarpan in Badrinath they should absolutely not do Gaya Shraddh.
The Pitru tarpan rituals are done by the male member of the family whose father has already expired. There are clear reasons why Pitru tarpan rituals are not done when your father is still alive, we will get into all that in another article but that is essential to know.
There are many types of tarpan rituals within this including Nitya tarpan, Annadanamatkat Shraddh in the same tithi that ancestors had expired, Bhojanatmak Shraddh and various categories.
